Changes

Faraz,

You and I both know how much I hate changes.. and there have been a lot of them lately. The biggest of them yet is you moving to Canada. Its so weird to think that you'll be in a different country and even weirder to think that we'll only see you a couple of times a year for a while.

Sometimes its hard to realize that we are in our 20s, and not little kids anymore. Just the other day I was thinking about the things we did as kids - like building a tent in our living room with the dining chairs and a lot of blankets and comforters. We would play for hours underneath there and even eat snacks in my play kitchen-ware. It's the little things that become memorable as you look back. I wish time would slow down sometimes, but it seems to be going by faster and faster instead.

You sure can drive me crazy A LOT of times, but we're going to miss having you around all the time. You know moving away back to Canada for this new job and all means you will have to grow up and act your age, right? :)

Things have always come so easily for you, or so it seems. Whether its winning things off of twitter many times over or leisure reading as the rest of us prepare rigorously for exams, you've taken everything in stride.

Never doubt your abilities, but don't become over-confident either. Best wishes as you start this new job! I know this is just the beginning of a lot of great things to come your way.

Love you always,

iPhone

Faraz is moving to Canada and not planning on using his iPhone there, which means that I have his iPhone until I'm eligible to upgrade to the newer iPhone. and he has my LG Vu.

Undoubtedly, it's a one sided win for me! :) :)

Read my horror story with the LG Vu here and here.

What applications do you guys recommend for the iPhone?

P.S. Don't forget to leave me a comment below on your thoughts! As always, I'd love to hear from you.

Graduation Party

I LOVE barbecues and I love family gatherings, so a joint barbecue for nearby relatives and some friends for Faraz's and my graduation party yesterday was definitely my kind of day. It was also kind of a farewell party for Faraz. I can't believe that Faraz will be leaving next week for Canada!

Thank you all for coming! We had a great time and hope you did too.

The whole day turned out to the be a lot of fun. We got back from the park around 7:30ish and a lot of our family came straight from the park to our house. From there, later that night, Aamir Mamma, Sony Mammi, Sohaib Bhai, Ayaz, Faraz, Saad, Sabih, Daniyal, and I went to Dave and Busters in Manhattan which was a lot of fun too. I've never been there and it was great. We got home around 3 A.M. and I went straight to bed - what an exhausting but FUN day!

By the way, would you believe I'm still making trips to the dentist? I've already been four times and tomorrow I go back for the fifth time since June 4th! Apparently my mouth is small and the root is curved which as a combination is making this procedure take forever! Lucky me. Being the wimp I am, of course this would happen to me.

P.S. Don't forget to leave me a comment below on your thoughts! As always, I'd love to hear from you.

A Trip to Mississauga with Faraz

Earlier this month, the Sunday after our Washington D.C. trip, Faraz and I drove up to Mississauga in Canada for about five days (which was originally supposed to be a 2 day trip) because he had a job interview.

On our drive up to Mississauga, we passed through an area (Binghamton) that just had a tornado hit. Passing the storm was insane, with crazy rain and wind - but thankfully we drove right through it in fifteen or twenty minutes.

We have a LOT of family up in Mississauga (some of which were just here for the wedding). I love going to see places and things, so one of the nice things about just us two going was I got to go around downtown Toronto the two days Faraz was there interviewing. I used to live in Toronto, but I don't think I've ever gone before.

Did you know that pretty much the whole downtown Toronto has an underground mall that is connected by pathways. Because its so cold there in the winter, people can just go to the basement level from their office buildings and get to virtually anywhere in downtown they want without ever having to step outside. It was pretty neat, and immaculate!

Faraz got the job, and he'll be moving to Canada the first of July! Whoa, talk about growing up fast!

I'm going to miss him a lot, and it'll be weird having him move there... but I wish him nothing but the best... and I guess the past five years of him living at school kind of prepared us... but not really considering we would see him a few weekends a month.

Sigh.

The night he got the job, my brother and I went to Demetre's with my aunt and her family to celebrate. Demetre's is an all-dessert restaurant and it was amazing to say the very least. We definitely have to take our parents there next time we're in the area.  I've always heard about it, but never went there before.

This is what I had:

It was absolutely delicious! It's called "Sweetcar Named Devour" and consisted of chocolate ice cream (under the crepe), fresh strawberries, and fudge sauce! Yum!

Touring Washington D.C.

While we travel to Virginia occasionally to visit family, we never set time aside to actually go visit places and see things.

For the longest time I have wanted to go and tour D.C. since the last time I did so, I was pretty young and a) I don't remember much of it and b) I wasn't interested in that stuff like I am now. So on the first thursday of June, we took a family trip to D.C. for the day (and to prove our dedication... we left at 6 AM!).

We visited the Air and Space Museum, toured the Capitol and the Library of Congress, and saw the Monument amongst other things. One thing that we didn't get a chance to do that I really wanted to go see was visit the Arlington National Cemetery. I've always wanted to go and see the eternal flame at JFK's grave site. But on our way there, it started raining and thunder-storming a lot, so we ended up heading back home instead.

Maria Baji's Wedding Week

The last month has been hectic, insanely busy, and chaotic but SO much fun!

I thought I would get some relaxing time in after all the wedding events, since it’s been crazy since end of April around when finals were about to begin… but not yet.

As soon as exams ended, it was graduation week (Shazia’s, then mine, and then Faraz’s and Sheeraz’s a week later)… and then full into the wedding stuff.

In our culture, wedding festivities usually end up being about a week long and they lead up to the wedding itself; the evening of Faraz’s graduation (May 27th) was also the Mehndi event for Maria Baji’s Wedding.
It was also the day most of the guests from around the country and elsewhere (mostly Canada) began to arrive as it was also the night before the wedding… which made it seem more like a wedding house.

That night, Maria Baji got her bridal mehndi put on, and many of us girls and women put on mehndi as well… and did a few last minute things for the big day.

The day of the wedding was hectic, chaotic, tiring but so much fun! It’s crazy how much planning needs to be done for one event that will only be several hours long. The wedding was so much fun and so many people were there – one of the great things about weddings is that it becomes a family reunion… you see so many family members all in one place and it’s great.

For the whole Memorial Day long weekend, it was pretty much family time (and a lot of fun).

Congratulations Maria Baji and Raheel Bhai! I’m so happy for you. May you be blessed with a lifetime of happiness together!

Summer Reading

I'm not embarrassed to admit that the first book on my list for summer reading is:

I had pre-ordered The Baby-Sitters Club: The Summer Before book and I got it the day it was released... but was so busy with school that I didn't get a chance to read it until our drive back from Canada.

I haven't really "read" for fun probably since college started so I'm definitely looking for suggestions on good novels to read.

Root Canal

There are some things that just shouldn’t be done. Like drilling a hole in my teeth!

If you know me even a little bit, you can probably imagine me cringing at the very least. I’m a wimp and I know it.

Last Tuesday (Jun 1st), right after all the wedding festivities (thankfully not during it), I developed a slight toothache near my top left teeth that progressively got worse and worse until it became unbearable by Thursday. I hate doctors, hospitals, and anything in that sphere… so of course I let the pain get worse and worse until I couldn’t tolerate it at all before scheduling an appointment for the dentist as my last resort. It got so bad that I needed to be biting my finger to alleviate the pain like I was a child teething or something.

I tried tylenol after tylenol to no avail, then went to the pharmacy late night Wednesday and got Ora-jel – which worked (it numbs you so you can’t feel the pain) – for five to ten minutes MAXIMUM! And I could only apply the gel 4 times per day!!

I called in for an appointment on that Thursday on our way to Washington D.C. (more about that later) for that Friday. I got lucky I guess because the actual dentist picked up the phone and not the secretary so I was able to ask if I could apply the gel more frequently or if there was something else that would help. He said no to the gel, but told me to take aleve… and my goodness – it made such a big difference! Within ten or fifteen minutes of taking aleve, the toothache was substantially less and I was able to actually enjoy my day in D.C.

FYI – aleve is definitely a strong medicine because within a few minutes of me taking it I got dizzy and started sweating like crazy, but hey it did its job. As soon as the medicine wears off though, the pain is oh so strong.

Anyhow, we figured it was my wisdom tooth that was bothering me because of the location of the pain, but it turned that was only part of the problem – I needed a root canal on the tooth right next to my wisdom tooth. Of course, I freaked out – I don’t handle pain well at all! And we have all heard those horror root canal stories.

Fortunately, my experience was a lot better than I had imagined. Most of the pain subsided as soon as I was anesthetized for the root canal and the procedure itself was relatively pain free. I don’t know if I just got lucky (because we all know how nervous and how uptight I was about the pain I’d feel) or what, but I sure am glad it went so well.

I’m kinda glad it all happened at once amidst a very hectic time so I didn’t have time to read online about it all, and so I went in to the dentist office not having a false sense of what was to come.

I couldn’t go back for the second part of it until a week after the first part since Faraz and I were in Canada (more about that later too). Yesterday I went in for the second part – and for whatever reason – the left side of my face feels odd… can’t really explain it… and some of the pain (but very slight) is back. I go back Wednesday hopefully for the last time in a while… let’s see.

After all the time I spent avoiding the doctor’s/dentists office, the past week made up for it all.

This joke's a lot funnier now that the pain is considerably less, but when's the best time to visit the dentist? "Tooth hurty"... get it? 2:30! And that's exactly what I waited for.
